Few metros concentrate this much regulated activity in one place. Bank of America and Truist are headquartered in Charlotte, and Wells Fargo runs its East Coast operations here. Honeywell, Nucor, Duke Energy and Sonic Automotive are based in the city, Lowe's is up the road in Mooresville, and Advocate Health, the parent of Atrium Health, has its headquarters on Blythe Boulevard. The region is also the largest manufacturing region in the Carolinas. That is a lot of model risk management, OCC and state examinations, safety programs and HIPAA in a single labor market.

It also means Charlotte companies have heard every AI pitch and have seen what happens when a proof of concept meets a model risk committee. My work starts where those pilots stall. UNC Charlotte opened the first school of data science in the Carolinas in 2020, a joint effort of its computing, business, health and liberal arts colleges, and it offers an undergraduate degree in data science alongside graduate programs in data science and business analytics and in health informatics. The university sits next to University Research Park, one of the larger research parks in the country, and Davidson College adds a strong liberal arts pipeline north of the city.

The demand side is dominated by large, regulated employers: two bank headquarters and a major Wells Fargo presence, a utility, a steelmaker, an industrial conglomerate and a health system that runs 69 hospitals across six states. That shapes what AI looks like here. The winning projects are rarely the flashiest. They are the ones with clean evaluation, clear ownership and a paper trail that survives an audit.
